Who this day is suitable for:

Specialist stoma care nurses who care for individuals living with an ACE. We are running two identical Antegrade Continent Enema study days in 2026.

Learn how to care for an individual who is living with a Antegrade Continent Enema (ACE), exploring some of the challenges faced by some patients, and understand the variety of irrigation methods that can help to optimise quality of life for patients living with an ACE.

Learning objectives:

Understand the ACE Procedure: Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Antegrade Continence Enema (ACE) procedure, including surgical formation using the appendix or bowel and its role in managing constipation and faecal leakage.

Pre- and Post-operative Care: Learn the key steps in preparing for and managing post-operative care following an ACE procedure, including wound care and patient recovery.

Home-based Irrigation Techniques: Acquire knowledge on administering ACE irrigation at home, including using catheters, enema solutions, and irrigation bags, to help caregivers support patients effectively.

Troubleshooting Complications: Understand common post-operative and long-term complications associated with ACE, such as stoma closure, bowel response issues, and minor leakage, along with strategies for prevention and resolution.

Customising Irrigation Schedules: Learn to assist patients in developing a personalised irrigation routine based on individual bowel response, helping to optimise the results of the ACE procedure for improved quality of life.

Supporting Patient Independence: Gain skills to educate and empower children and their caregivers to independently manage the ACE procedure, focusing on safe
